What Piano Should I Buy - Acoustic or Electric?
Nothing can replace an acoustic piano that is in good condition and well maintained. The only good alternative is if the digital piano weighted keys, a much needed feature for technical development. It's so important that one must be careful when shopping for a digital piano because some salespeople, knowing that it is a requisite, will stretch the truth about what they are selling and the buyer will sometimes end up with less than he or she should have. Unfortunately, I've actually been aware of someone making an investment in a digital piano who, after the purchase, claimed "the salesman said the keys were weighted, so I figure it has to be okay." But sometimes "weighted" is a loose term in the industry, the reason being what I just stated. If you have piano experience and actually know what a weighted action should feel like, then do make sure you use discretion if a digital is a consideration. If you don't have experience, have someone who does go along with you to play the pianos.
There are a couple of instances where a digital might be beneficial. If you are in an apartment complex and are concerned about disturbing the neighbors, or if you really do not have the wall space to ensure that your piano gets placed near an inside wall as opposed to an outside wall, especially where windows (doors) are nearby. Digital pianos are not really susceptible to climatic changes and they don't need to be tuned. However, that being said, if it is within your means to own the real thing, then do so.The action is real, the sound is real. Yes, you will have to incur regular maintenance fees, like tuning and some other work from time to time, but well worth it. For years and years, the digital industry has been doing everything it can to "live up to the real thing," which tells us something.
